Waiting for Macbeth

There was a great crack of thunder. One minute the heath, with its rocks and its rough grass, was empty. The next minute, three strange figures were standing there. The three witches had returned.

'Where have you been, sister?' called the first.

'Killing pigs,' replied the second with an unpleasant, smile.

'I met a sailor's wife,' the first said. 'She was eating some nice-looking nuts, and I thought I'd like one or two, so I said "Give me some of those." Would you believe it? That fat greedy woman just went on chewing and chewing. "Away with you, witch," she shouted at me. Well, she'll be sorry before much longer. I know that her husband is the captain of a ship sailing to Aleppo. She thinks her man is safe --but I shall make trouble for him. Oh yes --lots and lots of trouble.'

The other two promised to help their sister. Together they would stir up wind and storm, so that she could punish the sailor's wife.

'I'll make the winds blow so that he never gets any rest,' continued the first witch, 'Even if that ship doesn't sink, he's going to be more frightened and more exhausted than he has ever been in his life. That will teach him and his fat wife to be a little more generous to witches!'

Suddenly the look of anger on her face changed. She had remembered something. 'Never mind about that, for now,' she said. 'Look at what I've got!'
