In the graveyard
Mina Murray's diary
11th August, three a.m. -- I am too alarmed to sleep. I woke up suddenly during the night with a horrible feeling of fear. Lucy's bed was empty, and she was not in the room. The door was shut, but not locked, as I had left it. I ran downstairs and searched all the rooms, with my heart growing frantic with fear. She was not there, and the hall door was not locked.
I got a warm shawl and ran out to a place from which I could see the graveyard where our favourite seat is, hoping that Lucy would be there. I was not disappointed, because I could see her there in the moonlight. Suddenly the light faded as a cloud covered the moon, but not before I thought I saw something dark beside the seat and bending over it.
As fast as I could, I ran towards the graveyard. When I got to the top of the cliff, the moon was shining again, and I could see that there was definitely something long and black bending over the white figure that was on the bench. I called out in fright, 'Lucy!' and something raised its head. I could see a white face and red gleaming eyes.
I ran on to the churchyard. As I entered, the church was between me and the bench, and when I could see Lucy again, she was quite alone.
